Most tape failures are not manufacturing defects — they are specification errors made months earlier, at the RFQ. These five account for the majority of them.
1. Specifying temperature but not abrasion (or vice versa)
Automotive harness tape is graded on two independent axes: the LV 312 temperature class (T1–T4) and the European abrasion class (Class C, Class D). A high temperature rating does not imply toughness against rubbing. Ask for both, explicitly.
2. Confusing "flame retardant" with "fireproof"
"Fireproof" is not a tape standard. The certifiable specs are UL 510 (insulating tape flame test) and UL 94 V-0 (self-extinguishing material rating). Buy to those, and ask whether you also need zero-halogen.
3. Using foam where fleece belongs
For interior squeak and rattle, foam tape compresses permanently — the noise returns within a season. A lofted PET fleece stays springy and keeps damping. This one mistake generates a lot of warranty noise complaints.
4. Testing on a clean bench instead of real conditions
Tack on a clean, room-temperature surface tells you very little. Test at the actual temperature, on the actual substrate, with the actual contamination (oil, plasticiser, dust) the part will see. Any serious supplier ships free samples precisely so you can try to break them.
5. Deciding on unit price alone
The roll price is the smallest number in the decision. Application speed (does it hand-tear?), failure and rework rates, MOQ, lead time and freight usually dominate. A slightly more expensive tape that never fails on the line is normally the cheaper tape.
