IATF 16949 — the automotive requirement
IATF 16949 is built on top of ISO 9001 and adds what the automotive industry demands: defect prevention rather than detection, PPAP-style part approval, control plans, traceability, and reduction of variation and waste across the supply chain. If you are supplying an OEM or a Tier-1 harness maker, it is usually not optional.
What it means in practice for tape
- Consistency roll to roll — the point of the automotive system is that batch 400 performs like batch 1.
- Traceability — you can trace a roll back to its production run if a field issue appears.
- Change control — the supplier cannot quietly alter a backing or adhesive without notifying you.
How to verify, not just trust
Ask for the certificate itself, check the expiry date and the scope (the scope must actually cover the product you're buying). Then pair it with the product-level marks your part needs — UL 510 / UL 94 V-0 for flame, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for textiles, RoHS and REACH for substances.
