The roll price is the smallest, most visible number in a cost that is mostly hidden — and buyers who optimise it in isolation routinely pay more overall. The four costs the roll price hides
- Application cost. A tape that hand-tears cleanly removes scissors from the line; one that frays or tears crooked slows every operator. Across thousands of parts a shift, seconds of cycle time dwarf a cent of unit price.

- + inventory carrying cost (MOQ, lead time)

Run that and the "expensive" tape that never fails on the line is frequently the cheapest tape you can buy.
