Getting a flame claim you can put in a compliance file

The need: Your specification names a flame requirement and purchasing has to produce evidence, not a reassurance. Here is exactly what to ask for.

UL 510, UL 94 V-0, zero-halogen and “self-extinguishing” are four different requirements. Quote the clause from your drawing verbatim instead of paraphrasing it — a supplier answering a different clause in good faith is the most common reason a release stalls.

Then ask for the record at model level. A file number covers the types listed in it, not a product range. Our record under ANSI/CAN/UL 510A — file E544340, certificate UL-US-2552528-0, category OARC2 — covers tape type Z1V020. It is not evidence for other models, and it is not a UL 94 V-0 classification.

Send the clause and the application and EJOY says which document covers the proposed grade and which gap remains. Where no record exists for a model we say so rather than pointing at the file number.

How to choose

Getting it right in 4 steps

1

Copy the clause, do not summarise it

Standard, edition, class and any halogen requirement, exactly as the drawing writes it.

2

Ask which model the record lists

File number, certificate number, category, standard and edition, and the tape type named in the record.

3

Treat halogen content as a separate line

It is not covered by a flame classification. If the drawing carries both, ask for both declarations and their test basis.

4

Keep the evidence with the part release

File the document against the model you released, not against the supplier — that is what an audit asks for.

FAQ

Getting a flame claim you can put in a compliance file — questions & answers

What does a usable flame claim look like in a quote?

Model, standard and edition, the class, the file and certificate number, the category, and the tape type the record actually lists. Anything less cannot go into a compliance file.

Does a UL file number cover a supplier's whole range?

No. It covers the types listed in it. Ours covers tape type Z1V020 under ANSI/CAN/UL 510A (file E544340, certificate UL-US-2552528-0, category OARC2) — and that record is not a UL 94 V-0 classification.

Is zero-halogen implied by a flame classification?

No. They are separate requirements with separate test bases. Ask for the halogen declaration explicitly if your drawing calls for it.

What if there is no record for the grade you propose?

We say so, and the qualification has to establish it. That is a better starting position than a supplier who points at a file number covering a different model.
