ISO 9227 and ASTM B117 define how a salt-spray apparatus is operated; they do not set an exposure duration or a pass mark for a tape. IEC 60068-2-11 and 60068-2-52 differ again — continuous versus cyclic. So “passed salt spray” means nothing until the method, specimen, substrate and acceptance criteria are named.

Does ASTM B117 prove marine service life?

No. The practice itself warns that stand-alone results seldom correlate with natural-environment performance. Qualify the assembly for its real combination of salt, condensation, UV and temperature.

Continuous or cyclic — does it matter?

Very much. IEC 60068-2-11 compares corrosion resistance; 60068-2-52 is cyclic with wet and dry phases. Use whichever your specification names.

Can one grade do chamber masking and field protection?

Not automatically. Masking is judged on edge hold and clean removal, field protection on long-term bond and serviceability.

What do you need to propose a grade?

The method and cycle, the substrate, the wrap or mask geometry, and your acceptance criteria. We then send samples for your own validation.
